The European Sabre was derived from the Turkish Scimitar in the 15th century. The Fencing Sabre is most identifiable with a cutlass a sword with a straight or slightly curved blade and a hilt featuring a solid cupped shaped guard. It was a common naval weapon and official weapon in the United States Navy stores until 1949.
